Tired of the same old photo techniques? I love this tool…not the latest, greatest…but a favorite of mine nevertheless. It never fails to pack a punch – no pun intended. There are numerous versions of this tool…such as the die cut for a multi-purpose machine like the one below:

The puzzle pattern is just one of many available.

Scrapbook stores carry smaller more economical versions, but the idea is the same. Make sure you don’t use original photos – but copies. Cut your photos and then have some fun putting the puzzle pieces back together. Use a bright colored mat behind the pieces and leave some spaces between them to make the photo pieces pop.

You can also cut up your photographs randomly using your own shapes – which doesn’t cost a dime. Then put them back together emphasizing the pieces. Lots of ways to use this idea – it never disappoints!

Use Leftover Scrapbooking Letters

I always end up with a pile of mismatched alphabet letters from my scrapbooking projects. I keep them in a box and mix them together to create unique and stylish words, names, thoughts, titles. Many times they are more dramatic because of the differences in styles and color.

If I cannot find just the right color mix to be effective, I bring out my paints and paint them to match my layout theme. One thing’s for sure. Nothing is wasted in my scrapbooking area.

Many times it is these simple, inexpensive but creative techniques that are the most interesting in your layouts.

Money Saving Idea

Here’s another money saving idea for scrapbooking. Do you save your scraps from all those pricey but beautiful scrapbooking papers? I sure do. A great way to use some of them up is to create your own design by colour or pattern blocking. Simply cut out random squares or other shapes from your scraps in matching colour families (this can also include an array of patterns in complimentary colours). Then glue onto a plain paper, interweaving with your photo layout to create a wonderful theme all your own. If your scraps work well as a quilt, don’t bother using a background colour. Let your imagination rule. That’s unique!
