Thanksgiving Scrapbooking Idea

Nothing inspires creativity more than the bold colors of Autumn! Thanksgiving is such an important time of the year and scrapbooking these themes can get a bit redundant. I came up with a great idea for combining the two with a new take on it.
- choose scrapbooking paper in fall colors
- draw or paint an autumn tree trunk and branches such as the one shown here
- cut out different colors, types and sizes of leaves using scrapbooking or craft paper
- add photos of your family – one to each leaf
- add your Thanksgiving dinner menu to a leaf too!
- attach the leaves to your tree branches with ribbons or other materials in complimentary colors
- journal your date, Thanksgiving activities, special guests or anything else – including some of the things you are most thankful for this year
This makes a wonderful layout for the season – something a little different.

Halloween Scrapbooking Idea
Looking for something a little different for your Halloween layouts, without breaking the bank? This idea will work for any type of layout and for any season as well…as you will soon see!
Use cookie cutters to create your journal templates or even create backgrounds and frames for your photos – make them out of colored card stock or any patterned paper that might fit the bill. They are cheap to buy and are available in an amazing variety of shapes and sizes – easy to fit to any sized space you have. They are so versatile and don’t require a die cutting machine! Also, they can be used over and over again.
These great little tools are available for all occasions including Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving or any other special season or theme, and the best part is that they can be purchased almost anywhere – including Dollar Stores.
I love this idea, don’t you?

Scrapbook a Puzzle

Tired of the same old photo techniques? I love this tool…not the latest, greatest…but a favorite of mine nevertheless. It never fails to pack a punch – no pun intended. There are numerous versions of this tool…such as the die cut for a multi-purpose machine like the one below:
This die is designed for use only with the Big Shot Pro Machine for those of you who don’t mind a larger up front investment in your tools for a long term gain.
The puzzle pattern is just one of many available.
Scrapbook stores carry smaller more economical versions, but the idea is the same. Make sure you don’t use original photos – but copies. Cut your photos and then have some fun putting the puzzle pieces back together. Use a bright colored mat behind the pieces and leave some spaces between them to make the photo pieces pop.
You can also cut up your photographs randomly using your own shapes – which doesn’t cost a dime. Then put them back together emphasizing the pieces. Lots of ways to use this idea – it never disappoints!

Hidden Journal Pockets for Scrapbooking
Do you ever have just too many photos and embellishments to allow for proper journaling? I often get carried away with my design and elements and end up squeezing a shortened version of my story into a small space. Sometimes it doesn’t look right and that is because I’ve not designed my page with it in mind in the first place.
Here’s an idea for creating hidden space for your journaling.

I love this technique because it can be adapted to fit into any layout. The method is simple.
- Create a space behind one of your photos by gluing only the outside edges of the photo onto the layout leaving one end open.
- Prepare a journal card from cardstock with the story handwritten or typed onto it (slightly smaller than the photo) so that it will fit behind
- Add a tab or ribbon for pulling it out from behind the photo – or leave it stuffed halfway in so that it’s not completely hidden from sight.
There are so many ways to use this idea and at least as many materials for decorating the journal cards and tabs. I hope you’ll try it!

Scrapbook a Year in Pictures
Here’s an idea for a gift for someone, or for your own scrapbooking:
1. Create a double layout of a Year in your life.
2. Divide each page into 6 sections totaling 12 months.
3. Select photos of the outstanding events occurring in your life in each month…some months may have several key photos.
4. Embellish each section with the weather or colors associated with holidays occurring in that particular month.
5. Consider events like birthdays, anniversaries, trips, buying a new car, moving, special holidays, yearly traditions – almost anything.
6. Size your photos so that they can fit into the space allotted for them. Don’t be afraid to create different sized sections for each month to create a more interesting layout.

7. Collect your photos during the year with this type of project in mind.
8. Make this a yearly project!

Scrapbooking Pockets
I hate to leave out any of my great photos but sometimes I have no choice. I look for ways to include them in the layout without crowding. I love to make photo pockets. They can be made from any kind of material – paper or fabric. These can also be used for keeping sentimental items that are related to your layout, or souvenirs – just about anything that will fit.
Here’s one great idea I had.
When you’re going through your closets to clean up your old jeans, pants or anything else…cut off the pockets and fasten them to your scrapbooking paper. They come in all shapes and sizes. Use the pockets to place all your extra stuff in – the small items that add to your story. The more detail on the pockets, the better. If the pockets are plain you can embellish them with metallics, ribbon, buttons or just about anything. Match everything to your layout theme.
Just glue the outside edges of your pocket onto your paper and keep the top open for your photos and souvenirs to slip in. Cheap and effective. Have fun with this one!

Scrapbooking School Photos
Here’s an idea for the many school photos you have either hanging on the wall, or stuffed into drawers. The years do tend to fly by and what do you do with all those pictures? Why not create an album for each of your kids, arranged in chronological order.

Include in your layouts:
- the year’s school photo of your child
- a sample of their progress reports for the year (choose the best one!)
- notes on special accomplishments or activities they took part in at school
- a list of their friends and teachers
- names of their favorite games, movies, sports or other activities
- a personal note from “Mom” or “Dad”
You may want to use fall colors for your palette. Embellishments are easy…stick to the traditional school format using school tools, etc. You can’t go wrong with this strategy!
The album can be kept until your child leaves home – then send it along with them as a wonderful memory of their school years. They’ll be so happy you put in the effort to capture their personalities and accomplishments!
Here are some of my favorite products for School Scrapbooking. I hope you like them as much as I do:

Double Up Scrapbooking
That’s right. It’s really ok to double your layout when you have too many pictures. But don’t be overwhelmed by the oversized canvas. It can be a bit intimidating until you’ve tried it a few times.
I like to imagine the end result as one large picture, then I break it down into two halves. You might want to draw it out as a whole on a scratch pad first. Next, determine where your dividing line will be. Be sure to cut your photos at a reasonable spot and take that into consideration when you’re planning your layouts. Always, always use similar colors and designs elements for both pages to create balance and connection between the two sides.
