Double Up Scrapbooking
That’s right. It’s really ok to double your layout when you have too many pictures. But don’t be overwhelmed by the oversized canvas. It can be a bit intimidating until you’ve tried it a few times.
I like to imagine the end result as one large picture, then I break it down into two halves. You might want to draw it out as a whole on a scratch pad first. Next, determine where your dividing line will be. Be sure to cut your photos at a reasonable spot and take that into consideration when you’re planning your layouts. Always, always use similar colors and designs elements for both pages to create balance and connection between the two sides.

Scrapbooking and Cardmaking
I find that people who love Scrapbooking often display a similar passion for Cardmaking. When you think about it, both are very alike except for a few basic differences.
- Size is a considerable difference – scrapbooking layouts are usually large, cards are smaller. It’s challenging to work in either size of canvas.
- Creativity is required in both scrapbooking and cardmaking when it comes to choosing just the right colors of paper and co-ordinating embellishments. Design and technique is key in either craft.
- In scrapbooking you would place your thoughts in a journal message, along with your pictures – in a handmade card you would express your thoughts by use of poetry or verses, but could still use pictures if you chose to – I do!
- Scrapbook pages are created to last forever – Cards are intended for a single occasion, although I admit I keep all the handmade cards I get – and guess what I sometimes do with them! Scrapbook them. Funny isn’t it?
- Scrapbooking is usually done as a self expression and is a way of preserving your own personal memories. These wonderful works of art can of course be shared with others. Cardmaking on the other hand is done entirely as a creative labour of love especially for someone else.
- Here’s another important similarity. You would use most of the same supplies to create either! And remember, our unique scrapbooking tags are designed to be used equally well for scrapbooking or cardmaking. Try our easy downloads for all your projects.
When you consider this information, it’s easy to understand why one of these creative passtimes could naturally lead to the other. Do you have a favorite? I enjoy both!

Baby Expressions
Parents work very hard to create reactions from our babies. We talk baby talk, we goo and coo at them. We tickle and play. We make funny noises. And we are usually rewarded with an array of facial expressions…that we in turn photograph, because those reactions were worth all the fuss we made! Our babies are becoming aware of themselves and others…and what a remarkable and miraculous thing it all is.
Why not design a layout which includes numerous facial expressions of your wee one. After all – they are born with a uniqueness and personality all their own…and we love everything about them – so show who they are as babies by capturing their quirkyness. Then as you continue to watch their little personalities evolve more and more – your scrapbooks will tell their whole story for a lifetime. Baby expressions are just the beginning!

All You Need is Love
Does your significant other ever leave you love notes? Do you melt when you find an affectionate note tucked into your lunch, or a drawer? You will always feel special when someones has taken the time to stop and express their love for you in this way.
Valentines Day is drawing close and it is the season of love. Be romantic and create a mini scrapbook album filled with old love notes or letters, mushy cards, photos or journaling of your most treasured gifts from your special someone, details of your most standout dates and the wonderful places you went together. Include quotes you both appreciate. Make a CD of your favourite music – “your” songs, and add it to a pocket inside the album. Celebrate your Valentine by creating a forever story with a Valentine theme. You will both treasure it!

The greatest thing you’ll ever learn
is to love and be loved in return

Birthday Scrapbooking
We aren’t usually short of birthday photos to scrapbook, but we may run out of ideas for new and interesting layouts which are more often than not filled with birthday candles, birthday balloons and birthday cakes. Ho hum!

We grow older every year but much stays the same. Our faces slowly change but nothing dramatic is apparent. How can we make those birthday layouts stand out from one another?
Often what makes your birthdays stand out most is the friends and loved ones who celebrate with you, and by the loving gifts you receive. Why not take photos of your gifts on your next birthday and document them too! You’ll always have those memories of who remembered and honoured you on your special day.

Family Resemblances and More
We often see scrapbook layouts where the similarities are emphasized with family members – as the sayings go…”like mother like daughter”, “like father like son” or “two peas in a pod”. We are most likely to focus on what makes us alike – parents and children, siblings – whatever the relationships – there are sure to be many likenesses either in physical appearance or behaviors – so this is a common theme.
So here’s a challenge for you. Document some of the interesting and unique ways that you are different than someone in your family too – for example interests, hobbies, beliefs, lifestyle choices, careers, etc. Try putting together a layout that shows the contrasts as well as the similarities…this will give your story a whole new dimension and make it a little more surprising.

Collecting Military Stories
In whatever way you may be affiliated with the military service, be it active duty, parent or child or grandchild of a service member or just know someone in the military – you will have stories to collect and preserve for future generations.

Paperhills Military Tag
It is helpful to remember the types of information you will want to keep a record of. Along with pictures, uniforms and medals there are the human tales of military life and experiences. Keep records of dates, training, battles, news from home, living conditions, weather and above all remember to include the emotional and human aspects of the military life of your family and friends. This is what will make all the difference between a record and a story that really explains the significance of the military experience.

Scrapbook a Gift of Christmas Past
I love to make homemade gifts for the special people in my life. In fact, my sister and I have done it for years at Christmas. We tend to get sentimental and work hard at making the gift an emotional one. We have a standing contest to see who can make the other one cry. Sounds silly but it keeps us close and really is a wonderful labour of love each year.
Here’s an idea for creating a gift of Christmas Past. This mini album is colorful and just the perfect size to tell your story in pictures. I particularly love the scalloped paper edges.
You could include a series of childhood Christmas photos, and tell the stories associated with them. There are many things you could include, for example your favourite presents and Christmas recipes…the sky’s the limit. Remember to make copies of your originals and use them for giving. Never touch your originals, especially in the case of vintage photos.

Love it? Frame It!
Do you ever create a scrapbooking masterpiece worthy of more than average attention? I have occasionally spent time on a piece of work that, when finished, is such a beautiful object that I don’t want it to get lost among all the other layouts. Remember these are works of art and are so much more than just a photo or series of photos.
I suggest that when this happens you take it to a printer, have a color copy made in the original size – then frame it and hang it in a special place so that you can enjoy it even more. Obviously we can’t do this with all of our work – we would need an abundance of wall space and let’s face it, not everything would suit our decor! But now and then, for that something special…try hanging it up. You will enjoy having a “feature space” for those one-of-a-kind memories – and you can trade it out anytime you want for a new one!

Money Saving Idea
Here’s another money saving idea for scrapbooking. Do you save your scraps from all those pricey but beautiful scrapbooking papers? I sure do. A great way to use some of them up is to create your own design by colour or pattern blocking. Simply cut out random squares or other shapes from your scraps in matching colour families (this can also include an array of patterns in complimentary colours). Then glue onto a plain paper, interweaving with your photo layout to create a wonderful theme all your own. If your scraps work well as a quilt, don’t bother using a background colour. Let your imagination rule. That’s unique!
