Handmade Embellishments
Here are some money saving ideas for creating your own handmade scrapbooking embellishments:
Using Magazine Cutouts
When you come across a fabulous magazine photo in the perfect colours and theme you’ve been needing for your scrapbooking layout – don’t worry about whether it’s acid and lignin free. There are ways to make it safe without spending alot of money!
1. Use Transparencies to protect your layouts -
These can be bought at most office supply stores for a very reasonable price.
- Select and cut out your chosen picture from a magazine or brochure.
- Apply the picture with glue to plain cardstock and trim around it.
- Sandwich the picture between 2 transparencies – one underneath your picture to protect your paper and keep it acid and lignin free, and one over top of it. This 2nd step may not be necessary – that is up to you.
The time you spend will be worth the effort. You’ll have an embellishment that is more unique than what you can buy in a store, but equally as safe for your layouts!
2. Another protective method for your handmade, or found pieces is to apply Neutralizing Spray to make the items more acid free. While it does not entirely remove all traces of acid and lignin, it does limit the aging process that may cause yellowing of your paper with time and exposure to air and moisture.
