Heritage Scrapbooking is a specialized area of scrapbooking.  It may not appeal to everyone, but for those who have the patience and interest in their roots – family history and geneology- it can be very rewarding.  Recording the details of your lineage, including births, deaths, marriages etc. is surely an endeavour of love which can take years to complete.  It is very likely to have its tedious moments along the way.  It may be a good idea to marry the geneology records and data to a unique picture legacy or Legacy Scrapbook.  In this way you can truly bring your treasured Family History to life, and add the fun factor to your work as well.

You will find the materials used for these wonderful records are entirely distinct from other scrapbooking materials.  The colours and textures often resemble vintage patterns and fabrics which bring the flavours of the past to your work.

There are many sources for vintage embellishments, which are especially fitting for your family legacy scrapbooking layouts.  Equally numerous are the ideas used for displaying your pictures and records.

Check out our Heritage Scrapbooking Tags. They are a fantastic way to embellish your layouts.  Our free tags are created in vintage designs and colours to suit the mood of all of your historical records.

Here are a few more ideas for antique embellishments that you may find useful and inexpensive for your historical scrapbooking.  Some of them could be found at thrift stores, antique malls or your local flea markets:

1. old jewellery (need not be expensive, and could even be slightly damaged), but would make excellent trim for any layout
2. vintage ribbon, lace or fabric
3. rustic hardware from old furniture, cupboards, etc.
4. old magazines or postcards
5. vintage photos or maps
6. old advertising or packaging
7. broken glass, china or pottery
8. old letters or correspondence
9. buttons and decoration from vintage clothing
10.any vintage fabric

If scrapbooking your family legacy draws your attention to antiques from the periods recorded in your history – you may want to use pictures of such antiques as well, or what about journaling how these special pieces were used in their day?  This could add another wonderful dimension to your journaling to make it even more interesting.

As you can see, the sky’s the limit.

While documenting your precious history in pictures, always be careful to  protect your layouts from any elements that may cause your materials to deteriorate.

On your quest to record your Heritage, be sure that you do not forget to document the most important aspects of your history:  memories of you, your values and lifestyle, and your relationships with family.  These are the details that are often lost for future generations.

The beauty of family brings us cherished memories we wish to hold forever; for it is through our memories that our hearts find their way home. -Flavia-
